Vinyl LPs have overtaken all physical entertainment format sales, bar Nintendo Switch games, for the first time in the U.K., according to figures from ERA.
So far this year, U.K. consumers have spent £80.9m on vinyl albums—up 12.2% over 2021 YTD. The format sits at #2 on the list of the U.K.’s best-selling physical entertainment formats.
CD albums are #4 with a £68.8m spend this year, which is down 8.1% on the same period last year. Vinyl’s figure, therefore, is nearly 20% ahead of CDs, following vinyl sales overtaking the format for the first time last year.
“For a 74-year-old analog format to eclipse the digital-age technology of games platforms is quite extraordinary,” ERA CEO Kim Bayley said. “Ten years into its long climb back to favor, the vinyl revival is most definitely here to stay.”
Playstation 4 and 5 games take third place on ERA's list, DVDs are at #5, Blu-ray at #6, Xbox at #7 and PC at #8.
