MEGAN GALLOPING TOWARD FREE AGENCY? ALBUM SUIT HEATS UP

Megan Thee Stallion and her label, 1501 Certified Entertainment, are back in court clashing over whether Something for Thee Hotties constitutes an “album” in the context of her contract. The court’s judgment will determine if she owes one or two more albums on the deal.

Megan, who is managed by Roc Nation chief Des Perez, responded to 1501’s countersuit on Twitter, writing, “lord free me from this joke ass label” and took aim at label head (and former MLB All-Star) Carl Crawford, informing, “First the man over my label said I don’t make him any money… now he counter suing trying to keep me on his label because he wants to make more money. lol. if I ain’t making you no money, why not just drop me?” And, well, that’s one of the nicer things she had to say.

Megan filed suit in February, arguing that Hotties “clearly meets the definition of an ‘album’ under the recording agreement because it is not less than forty-five (45) minutes in length.” On 3/21, 1501 filed its countersuit, the crux of which is that the album doesn’t satisfy the recording commitment because it contains only 29 minutes of new material. The label is also claiming breach of contract because it wasn’t provided an accounting of the rapper's “collaborations, sponsorships, endorsements and side engagements," of which they say 1501’s share exceeds $1m.

Both sides are asking the court to rule once and for all on Hotties' album status. If the court decides in 1501’s favor, Megan will owe two more albums under her current deal.
