Sales of vinyl LPs have overtaken those of all other physical entertainment formats, bar Nintendo Switch games, for the first time in the U.K., according to the Entertainment Retailers Association.
So far this year, U.K. consumers have spent £80.9m on vinyl—up 12.2% over YTD 2021.
The CD format is #4, with a £68.8m spend this year, down 8.1% during the same period last year. The vinyl figure, then, is nearly 20% ahead of CDs. Vinyl sales surpassed the format for the first time last year.
PlayStation 4 and 5 games take third place on the ERA's list, DVDs are at #5, Blu-ray is at #6, Xbox at #7 and PC at #8.
“For a 74-year-old analog format to eclipse the digital-age technology of games platforms is quite extraordinary,” said ERA CEO Kim Bayley. “Ten years into its long climb back to favor, vinyl is most definitely here to stay.”
